Arnold Schönberg Center Vienna, April 2026

On April 8, 2026, GFF partnered with the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna to present an evening of Cabaret Songs and other works.  The evening featured songs and humorous monologues by Grünbaum, music by Schönberg, other works by their contemporaries, as well as the European Premiere of Schwarzes Mädchen (Girl with Black Hair) an original work for violin composed by GFF Honoree Aliayta Foon-Dancoes, and performed by GFF Honoree Nathan Meltzer.  GFF commissioned the work in 2023 to commemorate the restitution to the Grünbaum family of the work by Egon Schiele of the same name.  The correspondences between Schönberg and Grünbaum go beyond mere contemporaneity.  Like Alexander Zemlinksy, Schönberg composed “Brettl-Lieder” (Cabaret Songs), and was by no means averse to high-quality operettas, for which Grünbaum wrote numerous libretti.  Their artistic interests also converged: Schönberg was an aspiring painter, while Grünbaum was an important art collector.  The works were performed by Cornelia Horak (soprano), Foivos Kyriakoudis (piano) and Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz (Emcee), as well as Meltzer.
