About Fritz Grünbaum
Franz “Fritz” Grünbaum was a legendary cabaret artist who dominated the stages of Weimar-era Berlin before taking Vienna’s stage, radio and music scenes by storm. When Hitler arrived in Vienna in March 1938, Fritz Grünbaum was at the top of the Nazis’ target list of cultural enemies and was immediately deported to the Dachau Concentration Camp.
Fritz Grünbaum’s biting wit and courage will long outlive him. Although his family was largely exterminated, his extended family has worked and fought for generations to recover the storied art collection stolen from him, including 81 works by Egon Schiele. His generosity to fellow artists will lift up and inspire generations to come.
